Mental Health First Aid - Training to provide help to people who are experiencing a mental health issue/crisis

Provided by Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)

Learn how to provide initial help to people who are showing signs of a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.
Mental Health First Aid Canada (MHFA), sponsored by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, is a 12-hour training course delivered in 4 modules, carried out over 2 days. MHFA is intended for adults interacting with adults (18 years and older).
This course discusses various mental illnesses and provides crisis skills for situations including:
  • Substance overdose
  • Suicidal behaviour
  • Panic attack
  • Acute stress reaction
  • Psychotic episode

MHFA is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. Just as physical first aid is administered to an injured person before medical treatment can be obtained, MHFA is given until appropriate treatment is found or until the crisis is resolved.
